Peppa Pig Birthday Cake DIY

How To Make a Peppa Pig Birthday Cake

Well, last year we had an amazing Rainbow Party for Miss Daisy's first birthday. This year she requested a Peppa Pig cake! With her little sister arriving only one month before, I wasn't up to an all out themed party but figured I could manage a cake!

Here's how we made a fabulous and easy Peppa Pig cake - you could use this for many licensed TV/movie characters. Especially Peppa as she's such a simple shape!

Here's how I did it:

1. First up I used an image of Peppa Pig from a google search to trace and create a template. I searched "Peppa Pig Colouring In" to get an image without colour etc. I magnified it and traced it straight from the screen!

2. Bake two cakes of your choice that will fit your stencil... I must admit I made the stencil after the cakes to ensure I could use the maximum amount of cake! I used my Gran's recipe.

3. Using your template cut out your cake pieces for the head and body.

4. Next up I used bought icing to create some features. I bought white Royal Icing and hand dyed the colours I needed. I rolled the blue and green to create the background around Peppa. The others were shaped/moulded by hand.

5. I used a buttercream icing to cover Peppa's red dress, and her pink face and ears. Then I thickened the buttercream icing and made a darker shade of pink to pipe an outline! (In future I would change two things.. I wouldn't use chocolate cake as when it crumbles under icing you can see it, and I'd probably to a glaze/ganache over cake to seal it before icing!)

6. Enjoy marvelous creation and use for two parties (two days in a row)

My hubby kept telling me that last years cake was going to be hard to beat! I hadn't set out to make myself a cake challenge every year, however, I know I loved the cakes my mum made for my siblings and I as we grew up and I enjoy baking. So I'd love to meet her requests as they come... we'll see what birthday #3 brings! Oh and someone else will be turning 1 before then! :) Bring on the cakes!

What's the most adventurous cake you've made?!

ERGObaby Doll Carrier Giveaway

This competition has now closed.

Our baby wearing journey began in 2010 when we fronted up at the Babes In Arms stand at the Pregnancy Baby and Kids Expo in Sydney. Myself being 7 months pregnant left hubby to try on and make the big decisions - he's good at decisions.. me, not so much! (Another story!) We spoke with Anita twice that day... once to try the Ergobaby carrier and once when we went back to buy it!

We've since bought two woven wraps and I've made a basic sling out of some vintage bed sheets.

Our ERGObaby carrier has gone many places with us, by car, plane, boat and on foot! Here are just a few shots of Miss Daisy enjoying the Ergo. She's now 2 and will still snuggle in and quickly fall asleep when popped in the Ergo! That's if her baby sister isn't already in there!

Three Blogs For A Thursday #15

Here we go again! :) I'm nearly at the end of my fabulous Aussie Kid Blogging friends... here are three more amazing blogs for you to check out!

Isn't the title of this blog magical. Surrounded by our children we are surrounded by inspiration - and from that comes an outpouring of creativity just waiting to be used.
I know from what I read here that I would have loved to work with Elise and that she would have been such a wonderful educator as she now is with her own children and through this blog. Truly some great ideas here - stay awhile! :)

I love the family focus of this delightful blog. I particularly love the outdoor play series and know that I'll find so many ideas useful as the weather is getting warmer and brighter! I love the name of the blog and love that I too can see the natural whimsical nature in my two year old... I love that this blog encourages me to foster that!

I love Ali's focus on process not product. This is something I have to remind myself of. It's so important to let our children explore, play and create without us always taking over to get them to a specific finished product. How much more can we learn and remember from letting them complete a task to their own interest, ability and desire. Thanks Ali for the fabulous ideas you share!

Real Life Wednesday

Generally in a day I have one or both children on my body.
It might be in the ERGO (either of them) napping as I stroll around the shops.
Sometimes it's cuddling and reading a story.
There's nursing Miss Peppa day and night (not so much at night now which is great!)
There's snuggling with Miss Daisy in the morning when she wakes too early for us to crawl out of bed!
Sometimes it's a combination.
Sometimes it's snuggle. nurse. read. repeat.

Lately I've had to come up with ingenious ways of nursing a fussy baby and entertaining, snuggling or reading to the toddler simultaneously!
It's tricky. It's all about timing. And it's fun!

This is us. This is Real Life.

Playdough is Always Fun

I think I may have found the world's easiest playdough recipe!

How often do you play with Playdough? We always have a batch in the fridge here for those times where we need an activity in a hurry!

I usually use my microwave playdough recipe, however, recently I found a fabulous new recipe that is even easier than that!

I could hardly believe my eyes!

You can find this 4 minute playdough recipe over at The Imagination Tree.

Miss Daisy and I bunkered down in her room a while back as Daddy and Poppa set to work putting a dishwasher into our kitchen! Hooray!
We rolled, we pricked, we patted, we built... it was a great morning of playdough fun!

But is there more to it than that?

We were able to discuss the texture of the playdough.
The length of the sticks.
The position of the sticks.
The height of the playdough tower.
The number of holes.
The emotion on faces. And copy them!
And so much more!

Playdough is an essential in our fridge! Always ready for little hands (and big) to explore!

Vegetarian Quesadillas - My Way

Just For Daisy - Vegetarian Quesadillas
I've got a thing for Veggie Mama... well, her blog mostly!
Ever since she posted her amazing Banana Pikelet recipe I've made sure to read each of the recipes she posts and have tried many of them along the way.
This one in particular caught my eye last week and as a sucker for Mexican I decided to give it a shot.

Here is my take on Veggie Mama's Black Bean Quesadillas

Introducing ::Vegetarian Quesadillas::

Ingredients
- tortilla wraps (we use Old El Paso Wholemeal)
- salad (tomato, baby spinach, sweet corn)
- avocado with a squeeze of fresh lemon (mashed)
- sour cream (yes please!)
- cheese (grated)

Ingredients
For the bean filling:
- 2 Tbs olive oil
- 1 tsp garlic
- 400g can four bean mix
- 400g can red kidney beans
- 400g can diced tomatoes
- 1 tsp cumin powder
- 1 pinch of chili powder

Instructions:Heat olive oil in a fry pan, fry off garlic and spices.
On a medium heat, add your two cans of beans. Stir continually, be rough and mash as you go!
Add diced tomatoes and continue to stir/mash.
Allow small amounts of time with no stirring for the heat to thicken your mixture.
You want to finish with a thick consistency similar to refried beans but still a little lumpier. :)

Lay a tortilla in a hot frypan (with a touch of spray oil if you wish). Spoon bean mixture to cover half the tortilla and top with grated cheese. Fold over onto itself. You can place another in the opposite side of pan now too! Allow to brown before flipping. Brown on other side and check that your cheese has melted.

Serve with sour cream, avocado, salsa and salad.

These were delicious and even my meat loving husband insisted they were better than traditional tacos!

Enjoy!

Real Life Wednesday

It's not one photo this week but a collection. It's Monday right now... both my babies are sleeping soundly. I've been in the garden; had my hands in potting mix and taken off my jumper kind of gardening.
I've hung the nappies and they're now dry, sitting patiently on the lounge and waiting to be folded.
I even had time to admire my bulbs and blossoms that are taking over my garden.

Spring has Sprung!

We had snow here Friday afternoon, to celebrate the last day of Winter I guess! But Spring is here with all of it's sunshiney goodness, fresh air, singing birds, laughing kookaburras, mowed lawns and green thumbs begging to head outdoors.

Father's Day Silhouette Canvas

I left our Father's Day crafting 'til the last minute this year (as with most things)! Thankfully, I found this on Pinterest and loved it straight away! So here is our own interpretation of a silhouette canvas for Daddy this Father's Day!

There is a great description on how to make these if you follow the link above. However, it's also pretty easy to do on your own!

We grabbed the following from our local cheap store:

- thick contact paper $3.00
- two canvases $6.00
- paint/brushes (we had these at home)

I took some side profile photographs of Miss Daisy and traced it straight from my computer screen as my printer is a little fiddly to use at the moment!

Once I had my profile I traced it onto the contact paper and cut it out. You will probably have to choose which parts of your child's hair to accent as you trace/cut.
Also remember because it's sticky it will be mirror image when on your canvas so decide which way you'd like your silhouette to face and trace it in reverse! :)

Once you've cut out your image out, peel off the backing paper and stick on canvas in desired position ensuring there are no bubbles and the edges are stuck down well to prevent paint bleeding underneath.

We then gave ours two coats of paint in a colour that matched some other things in our living room. Once they were dry (be patient and really let it dry off) we peeled back the contact carefully. And this is what resulted! A very clear silhouette of Miss Daisy!

Daddy was pleased to unwrap this unique gift on Father's Day. He also appreciated the new undies in the bottom of the bag too!
We also made a second canvas with the handprints of each family member. They now have pride of place in our living room! (next to the air cond remote!!)
